Cameras In The Courtroom

Nearly 10 years in the making, today we will get a decision over whether cameras may be allowed in South Dakota courtrooms.
KELOLAND reporter Vernon Brown reported on the first allowance of cameras in the South Dakota Supreme Court hearing in August 2001. It’s a practice still allowed today, which KELOLAND news brings you every quarter as they meet. But cameras are still not allowed in the courtroom during proceedings at the state court level in South Dakota. It’s why when KELOLAND News reports on court hearings, we will show video of defendants walking to and from court, use video of court papers and graphics to share quotes from within the hearings.
But just this past October, the state justices heard proposals for and against bringing cameras into state courthouses. KELOLAND News Assignment Editor Dexter Gronseth has been the coordinator for news coverage from SD Supreme Court hearings. He was one of those who testified about how allowing cameras would help the public better understand what happens in court. Justices also heard from a defense attorney about why he says cameras could interfere with the right of a fair trial.

In humans, probiotic supplements have been shown to boost "good" bacteria in preliminary research, reducing bacteria that trigger inflammation. Scientists think the beneficial microbes may improve the way people process emotions, resulting in less anxiety. They plan further studies.
Meanwhile, a research consortium of a half dozen universities in the U.K. is focused on the role inflammation may play in clinical depression, exploring a newly discovered link between immune disorders, such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, and mental illness.
Investigators say up to 40 percent of patients who receive interferon to treat a liver infection called hepatitis become depressed even though they were fine before treatment. Interferon triggers inflammation.
Researchers stress that the link between inflammation and clinical depression is not yet understood.
It's hoped that new drugs that reduce the inflammatory response can help ease depression or that existing anti-inflammatory drugs can be repurposed to help those who suffer from the mental disorder.

People who came from England, followed by Italians, Poles, and French people round out the largest ancestry groups in America.
There’s an old adage that says “Birds of a feather flock together” and that’s certainly the case with ethnic groups in the United States.
“For the most part, people of certain ancestries tend to congregate in certain parts of the country,” said Garoogian.
German-Americans have settled primarily in the Midwest where they account for more than 30 percent of the population.  You’ll find a heavy concentration of Irish-Americans in the U.S. Northeast, in states like Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts.
People with Mexican ancestry are found along the Southwestern border of the United States and are heavily concentrated in Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, San Diego, Dallas, and San Antonio.
There are more than 19 million people who identify themselves only as “American”.
The U.S. Census Bureau says the reason for this could be because their ancestors have been in the United States for so long, or they have such mixed backgrounds, that they do not identify with any particular group.

In an effort to stop the spread of Ebola, the government has banned public gatherings during the Christmas holidays. He denied the move undermines the constitution, which guarantees religious freedom.
Bayraytay said the administration is pleased with the public’s acceptance of the ban.
“[The government] is working with the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone so that we make sure that we are on the same frequency. I must say since the president proclaimed the western area surge [of anti-Ebola] measures ….we expect everybody after the [Christmas] church service to [go] home and use the day for reflection,” said Bayraytay.
He said officials expect citizens to return home by 5pm [local time] from all other activities “as a way of welcoming the New Year.”

Sierra Leone Trains New Ebola Burial Team

A spokesman for Sierra Leone’s government says a newly trained burial team will soon be deployed to those places most affected by the Ebola outbreak.
Abdulai Bayraytay said, “They are ready to go into the field. In fact, …we have given the current burial team a day off per week [with pay] so [they will] not be exhausted…”
Members of the new burial team, Bayraytay said, have been trained as hygienists to educate citizens about how the disease is spread.
His comments come after reports suggesting that long-serving team members are exhausted.
Bayraytay said new teams are being trained by the government’s health ministry in collaboration with international partners including the International Organization for Migration.
“[They] have been training routine teams for the western area in particular …and also in southeast and north of the country. We want to maintain that status because the burial team has been doing tremendous work -- [which] is why we [group] them in numbers of 12 each and assign them two vehicles,” said Bayraytay.

George H.W. Bush to Stay in Hospital Through Weekend

Doctors in Houston will keep former U.S. President George H.W. Bush in a  hospital through the weekend, though they "have begun discussing dates for his discharge," his office said Saturday.
Bush, 90, was taken by ambulance to Houston Methodist Hospital on Tuesday night and was admitted for observation after experiencing breathing difficulties earlier that evening, according to his spokesman, Jim McGrath.
There has been no word on whether the nation's 41st president is suffering from any particular ailment. McGrath said Wednesday that Bush's prognosis was positive and that he was being kept hospitalized as a precaution.
On Thursday, Bush received a Christmas Day visit from his wife, Barbara, as well as his son Neil and daughter-in-law Maria Bush. He was described as being in "great spirits."
"President Bush's condition has improved to the point that doctors have begun discussing dates for his discharge. He will remain at the Houston Methodist Hospital through the weekend for further observation," McGrath said Saturday.
George H.W. Bush was president from 1989 to 1993. He spent the previous eight years as Ronald Reagan's vice president.
His son, George W. Bush, served two terms as president beginning in 2001. Another son, Jeb Bush, is considering his own White House bid in 2016.

Spending in the 2015 budget is projected at 860 billion riyals ($230 billion), up from 855 billion in the 2014 budget plan. While that is a record amount, it is the smallest increase in more than a decade.
Revenues were projected to drop to 715 billion riyals in 2015 from 855 billion in the 2014 plan, leaving a deficit of 145 billion.
In the last six months, Brent crude oil has dropped from around $115 a barrel - a level at which the kingdom was raking in giant budget surpluses - to just above $60.
But government reserves at the central bank totaled 905 billion riyals at the end of October, enough to cover deficits of the size projected in 2015 for about six years, even excluding the government's other assets and its ability to borrow.
Saudi Arabia will continue spending actively on economic development projects, social welfare and security despite the oil price slide and challenging conditions in the global economy, the ministry said.

Saudi Arabia to Raise Spending, Cover Deficit with Reserves

Saudi Arabia plans to raise government spending 0.6 percent to a record high in its 2015 budget while covering a large deficit due to plunging oil prices with its huge fiscal reserves, the Ministry of Finance said on Thursday.
The budget gives the first detailed look at how the world's top oil exporter intends to handle an era of cheaper oil.
The stock market rose in the minutes after the announcement, trading 0.9 percent higher.
Financial markets had feared the kingdom might cut spending sharply, but the plan suggests Saudi authorities are confident of their ability to ride out a period of low oil prices and see no need for major austerity.
Some analysts believe Riyadh is content to see oil prices fall as a way to squeeze out competing producers in non-OPEC nations. The budget figures imply it could pursue this strategy for years if it felt that was necessary.
